Rethinking the Way Wire Reels Move Through the Jobsite

A heavy wire reel may need to travel from delivery to staging, through a building, and finally to the point of use. The challenge changes with the reel and the route. A narrow hallway calls for a compact system built around its own high-capacity reels. A large wooden or steel reel calls for equipment that can lift and move the reel where needed.

That is why ESA offers two Spool Boss™ models. Spool Boss™ Narrow and Spool Boss™ Wide are built for different applications, giving contractors and distributors a better way to handle heavy wire where they actually use it.

Spool Boss™ Narrow: High-Capacity Wire Reels Through Tight Spaces

On a project with standard doorways, narrow hallways and small electrical rooms, getting the wire to the pull location can be a job of its own. Spool Boss™ Narrow is designed for that route. Its 32-inch outside width and zero-turn-radius movement let crews bring a loaded reel through a standard 3-foot doorway and maneuver it along tighter interior paths.

The Narrow works with ESA’s purpose-built Spool Boss reels, which hold a large amount of wire in a compact setup. Solid-disc reels can carry up to 6,500 pounds of wire. ESA’s Reel Cradle provides a way to transport those Narrow reels to and from the jobsite before loading them onto the Spool Boss.

Once inside, one operator can use the built-in hydraulics to lift and position the reel. Instead of staging the wire far from the work area, the crew can bring it closer to where the pull will take place. For contractors working through corridors, doorways and confined electrical spaces, that access is the reason to choose the Narrow.

Spool Boss™ Wide: Move Large Reels Where Forklifts Have Limited Access

Large projects often receive feeder cable on heavy wooden or steel reels. Those reels may need to move deep inside a data center, hospital or other large building, where forklift access is limited or unavailable. Spool Boss™ Wide is built for this application.

The Wide handles wooden and steel reels up to 66 inches in diameter and 50 inches wide, with a load capacity of up to 6,500 pounds. A single operator can lift, move and position a compatible reel using the Spool Boss’s integrated hydraulics, braking system and zero-turn-radius movement. Where the building route accommodates the reel and equipment, electricians can bring a large reel closer to the work instead of depending on a forklift for every relocation or pulling wire from a distant staging area.

The key difference is the reel itself: Narrow uses ESA’s dedicated, high-capacity reels to reach tight spaces; Wide handles the large wooden and steel reels commonly delivered for major projects.

Both models have an always-on braking system that requires the operator to pull the brake release to move the unit. If the operator lets go of the release or becomes separated from the Spool Boss while pushing it into position, the brake engages and stops the unit.

A Better Way to Pay Off Wire in Distributor Wire Rooms

The Wide also has an important role before wire ever reaches the jobsite. In an electrical distributor’s wire room, crews repeatedly load reels, pay off wire, build parallel sets and prepare orders. Handling a heavy reel several times adds labor and creates more opportunities for strain or loss of control.

Spool Boss™ Wide lets one operator lift and position a large reel for controlled wire payoff without setting it on separate reel stands or relying on a forklift for each setup. Its built-in braking system helps the operator manage the reel during handling. For electrical distributors, it is the preferred way to pay off wire safely and efficiently in a wire room.

In ESA’s wire room time study, the Spool Boss workflow showed a 60 minute savings per parallel setup and teardown, and a 300% increase in parallel reels handled per day compared with the A-Frame process studied. Results will depend on the wire room and its workflow, but the study shows how much-repeated reel handling can affect throughput.

Match the Spool Boss to the Work

Choose Spool Boss™ Narrow when the job calls for high-capacity wire on ESA’s dedicated reels and the load must move through standard doors, narrow hallways or tight electrical spaces. Choose Spool Boss™ Wide when the job involves large wooden or steel reels that need to travel inside a major project, or when a distributor needs a safer, more productive wire room payoff system.

Both models help a single operator lift, move and position heavy reels with less manual handling. The right setup depends on the reel, the route and where the wire needs to be paid off.
